The Baseline Player of the Week: Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff is looking more and more like a future superstar. The 14-year-old continued her breakthrough year by defeating Qinwen Zheng, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, in the final of the prestigious Grade A 18-and-Under Orange Bowl. This makes the Delray Beach native the youngest girl to win the singles event since 2003.

The win caps off a season that has seen Gauff grow in popularity, winning the French Open junior singles title and the junior US Open doubles crown.

Gauff dropped just one set on her way to the title, and won her semifinal match, 6-0, 6-0. The teen is now ranked No. 2 in the junior world rankings, and No. 870 on the pro circuit.

"I’m happy I was able to finish on a high note," she said. "Next year, my goal is to be Top 100 in WTA."

"My dad told me at the beginning of the tournament, 'This is probably your last junior tournament, so play how you want to be remembered,'” Gauff said, after coming back from 2-4 down in the third set. "And that’s how I was thinking, people mostly know me to always fight, and even when I was down, I was like, ‘That’s how I want to be remembered,’ at least in junior tennis, and see what the next chapter has for me.”

Her WTA rise will be restricted somewhat by age restrictions as 14-year-old's can play just eight events (most of which are on the ITF Pro Circuit). Gauff will turn 15 in March and then be able to play 10 events.
