Taking on Kai Chen Cheng in the singles final, the 32-year-old took a strong hold of the first set immediately, creating a 4-1 lead before finishing things off with a volley, 6-2. Chang soon required a medical timeout for treatment to her lower back. After losing four points in the second set, she retired, leaving Peng with the victory.

Peng has had a solid few weeks, also winning an WTA Series 125K in Houston last month, marking her fourth career WTA title.

The Chinese player is currently ranked No. 181 after dealing with injuries in 2015 and an incident with the ITF anti-corruption unit earlier this year that left her with a three-month suspension for coercing a doubles partner. She was the world No. 1 in doubles in 2014.

Peng hasn't played in Melbourne since 2015, when she reached the fourth round.
