Federer, Djokovic win year-end ATP awards

Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were among the big names recognized at this year’s ATP World Tour season-end award announcement in London.

The Serbian captured two awards this year, sneaking past Nadal at the last minute to earn the ATP World No. 1 trophy. He was also honored as Comeback Player of the Year after returning from elbow surgery and climbing from outside of the Top 20 to No. 1. His coach, Marian Vajda, was named ATP Coach of the Year.

For the 16th straight year, crowd favorite Federer has been voted as the ATP's Fans’ Favorite player.

Meanwhile, Nadal was awarded his second Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award. The Spaniard was forced to cut his season short and withdraw from the fall season with knee, abdominal and ankle injuries. He ends another dominant year with a 45-4 record, four titles under his belt and an 11th French Open Crown.

Young rising players Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas also earned recognition for their breakout seasons. De Minaur was selected for Newcomer of the Year after reaching a career high ranking of No. 31, which places the 19-year-old as the second-youngest  ATP player inside the Top 100.

Tsitsipas, currently ranked No. 15 after starting 2018 at No. 19, earned Most Improved Player of the Year. He reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Toronto, and won his first title in Stockholm, as well as reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Fittingly, Tsitsipas and De Minaur faced off in the Next Gen ATP Finals championship match on Saturday, with Tsitsipas prevailing. The ATP Finals in London began on Sunday.
