Zhuhai stars mingle ahead of WTA Elite Trophy

While the WTA Finals in Singapore wrapped on Sunday, the second tier of year-end championships has just gotten underway in Zhuhai. The WTA Elite Trophy features the next wave of top stars that just missed out on the Singapore field.

This year, the 12-player Zhuhai draw includes top seed Daria Kasatkina, who was an alternate in Singapore, followed by Anastasija Sevastova, Aryna Sabalenka, Elise Mertens, Julia Goerges, Madison Keys, Garbine Muguruza, Caroline Garcia, Ashleigh Barty, Anett Kontaveit, Wang Qiang and Zhang Shuai.

While Singapore is split into two groups, Zhuhai features four: Azalea, Camellia, Orchid and Rose. The women all attended a special evening for the draw ceremony on Monday.

Keys is the sole American in the field, after last year's finalist CoCo Vandeweghe didn't make the cut this year.

She's in the Azalea group with Kasatkina and Wang. Kasatkina is enjoying a great fall season, having just cracked the Top 10 following a big title win in Moscow.

The 21-year-old opened her campaign with a gritty three-set win over Wang on Tuesday. Sabalenka also scored a win on Tuesday, over Barty.

Barty is coming in from reaching the Singapore doubles semifinals last week with Vandeweghe.

Muguruza was in Singapore last year, and comes in to Zhuhai as the No. 7 seed, landing in the Camellia group with Sevastova and Zhang. Goerges will be a favorite this week as the defending champion and a recent winner in Luxembourg.

Play continues on Wednesday with three singles matches including Goerges vs. Kontaveit, Kasatkina vs. Keys and Muguruza vs. Zhang.
