Kasatkina's coach, Philippe Dehaes, is known for his colorful metaphors, and during a coaching changeover in the second round of the Kremlin Cup, he came up with a new one:

"You know the China Wall?" he asked Kasatkina, who was down a set and a break to Alize Cornet. "Now you're going to be the Russian Wall. It's completely new in the market."

Kasatkina went on to win the tournament, and the nickname stuck. Now people,Ā including the Russian Wall herself, continue to use it.

"Now I have a nickname, Russian Wall," Kasatkina said. "The physios call me Russian Wall, and in Russia they call meĀ Russian Wall, but in Russian. So thanks Phil!"
