The 2018 season has been quite a year on the WTA tour, with three first-time major champions, a bevy of new stars and a series of miraculous comebacks.

And the WTA Awards, tasked with recognizing the season's standout players, put forth a list of nominations that encapsulates the spirit of the year. Here are the nominees:

Player of the Year

World No. 1 and French Open champion Simona Halep ...

Petra Kvitova, who's won five tournaments in 2018, the most on the tour ...

US Open and Indian Wells winner Naomi Osaka ...

US Open and Miami Open champions Ashleigh Barty and CoCo Vandeweghe ...

Wimbledon and Roland Garros champions Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova ...

and Wuhan WTA Premier 5 champions Elise Mertens and Demi Schuurs.

Three Americans feature in the Newcomer of the Year category: Amanda Anisimova, Danielle Collins and Sofia Kenin. They're joined by Mihaela Buzarnescu and Aryna Sabalenka.

The nominees for Comeback Player of the Year are Belinda Bencic, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Ajla Tomljanovic and Serena Williams.

And, finally, nominated for Most Improved Player of the Year are Kiki Bertens, Daria Kasatkina, Elise Mertens, Wang Qiang, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Julia Goerges.

The WTA Awards ceremony will take place in Singapore on Friday.
