What’s more, the 2019 event’s theme has already been announced, with "Camp: Notes on Fashion” as the title. That theme arrives inspired by Susan Sontag’s essay “Camp,” published in 1964.Per *Entertainment Weekly*, Sontag “describes camp as a genre of fashion that demonstrates ‘love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration ... style at the expense of content ... the triumph of the epicene style.’”
Lady Gaga herself is a beacon of camp culture—be it pop camp, queer camp or other subgenres. Styles enters as a co-chair perhaps because Gucci’s Michele is a co-chair as well, and the former One Direction star Styles is a centerpiece in Gucci’s latest ad campaign.
Perhaps Serena enjoys a co-chair role in light of her ongoing love affair with Vogue, which has placed her on its cover and featured her prominently over time. Wintour is, of course, a perennially present tennis fan.
The 2019 Met Gala will get campy on May 6, which means Serena doesn't plan to play Madrid.
