It's safe to say that Nick Kyrgios doesn't have the best history with Shanghai. For the third time in as many years, the Aussie was involved in controversy. This time, in a three-set loss to Bradley Klahn, he got into an lengthy argument with the umpire.

The 23-year-old expressed frustration with umpire Damien Dumusois who said that Kyrgios' effort in the previous point was "borderline" after it looked like Kyrgios didn't even attempt to hit a return.

Kyrgios thought Dumusois had said "borderline poor" and didn't let it go, especially as he was up a set at the time. Soon after, Kyrgios hit an ace, and turned to Dumusois, asking "borderline?" The argument kept going, with Kyrgios suggesting he would report the incident as a "put down" to the ATP office.

In Shanghai in 2016, the Australian tanked multiple points against Mischa Zverev, leading to a fine and eight-week suspension from the tour. In 2017, Kyrgios walked off halfway through his match against Steve Johnson, receiving a $10,000 fine.

While many people may have given up on the world No. 38, Roger Federer is not one of them, offering advice to the young player. Speaking to CNN, Federer said, "I think it's really up to him where he wants to go and what his potential really holds. We don't really know and I don't think he really knows exactly what his potential is.

"And only through understanding work ethic and scheduling and whatever it might be, creating the right team around himself, only then can you unlock the potential really."
