NEW YORK — Two tournament favorites got pushed hard on Sunday at the US Open. Top seed Rafael Nadal needed four sets against Nikoloz Basilashvili while Serena Williams fought through three against Kaia Kanepi.

All credit to Kanepi for a great week as she was the one that knocked out top seed Simona Halep on Day 1. Williams saw a slight dip in her form after a near-perfect performance over her sister Venus Williams, but she's only human, after all. Her 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win was still largely solid, and she earns a quarterfinal showdown with Karolina Pliskova.

Earlier in the day, Nadal seemed to be cruising to a straight-set win over the Georgian. He would end up dropping a tiebreaker, but still winning rather comfortably, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4. Nadal will face Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals. In ten meetings, they have never faced off on hard courts.
