On Tuesday in San Jose, Serena Williams was handed the most lopsided loss of her career by Johanna Konta. The 6-1, 6-0 scoreline was made more surprising by the fact that Konta, a former world No. 4, has slipped to No. 48.

Konta, the 2016 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic champion, reeled off a staggering 12 games in a row after dropping the opening game. The first-round match lasted only 51 minutes, making it Williams' shortest loss of her career.

It was also the only time Williams has failed to win more than one game in a match in her entire 23-year stint on the WTA Tour. Her two previous worst matches were a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Simona Halep in 2014 and a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Johnnette Kruger in 1998.

Williams was rightfully not pleased by the sub-par performance, but she gave a lot of credit to the Brit. Williams' comeback had just hit a high at Wimbledon where she reached the final only 10 months after giving birth to her daughter.

The 36-year-old will move on quickly from this blip, and get ready for the rest of the US Open Series.
