World Team Tennis, one of the longest-running leagues in tennis, kicked off its 43rd season on Sunday. A month-long season of dual-gender team action will travel all around the country, very likely hitting a city near you.

The brainchild of pioneer Billie Jean King, World Team Tennis includes six teams of men and women that play singles, doubles and mixed doubles. This season feature marquee stars like Sloane Stephens, Kevin Anderson, Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka, Sam Querrey, Frances Tiafoe and Bob and Mike Bryan.

There was an upset on opening day on Sunday when the defending champion Orange County Breakers fell to the Philadelphia Freedoms in Newport Beach, Calif. Taylor Townsend helped secure the 23-16 win for the Freedoms.

The same day, the Washington Kastles scored a road win over the hosting New York Empire, winning 22-18 in Flushing Meadows.

On Monday, backed by California native Sam Querrey, the Breakers got their first win of the season in dominant fashion 22-16 over the Springfield Lasers. Another match on Monday saw the Philadelphia Freedoms improve their record to 2-0 by beating the San Diego Aviators, 22-17.

The Kastles and Empire played a rematch on Monday, this time in Washington, DC, with the Kastles squeezing out a 21-20 victory thanks to a deciding super tiebreaker win from Tiafoe.

While that was a wild scoreline, it wouldn’t be WTT without a wild point. Anna-Lena Groenefeld of the San Diego Aviators in doubles action alongside Naomi Broady pulled off this:

World Team Tennis action continues with three matches on Wednesday and many more after that before finishing with the final on August 5.
