For British players at Wimbledon, there’s a fine line between pressure and inspiration. No one knows this better than Johanna Konta.

She had handled the pressure masterfully in her inspired run to the semifinals last year. Along the way, she gave British fans one of the best matches of the season in an epic quarterfinal win over Simona Halep, and the fans gave back in equal measure, willing her to victory in that match.

Since then, it’s been a bumpy ride for Konta. She ended last season on a five-match losing streak, and while she’s shown improvement of late, she enters Wimbledon on a seven-match losing streak against Top 10 players. Her latest defeat came at the hands of Caroline Wozniacki in Eastbourne, after being up a set.

Now No. 24 in the world, a year of uneven play for Konta can only serve to lower sky-high expectations that always follow the Brits at Wimbledon.

"I'm treating this week as another opportunity for me to perform and for me to keep building on what I feel is a better and better level that I've been playing over the last number of weeks," Konta said ahead of Wimbledon. "I'm just looking forward to going out there, competing, doing the best that I can. At the end of the day I'm only accountable to myself."

She opens against Natalia Vikhlyantseva on Tuesday.
