The two-time Grand Slam champion makes history by becoming the first-ever female French Davis Cup captain, replacing former French Open champion Yannick Noah. Spain's Davis Cup team has previously been led by women, including Gala Leon Garcia and Conchita Martinez.

Mauresmo, a former world No. 1, helped France win the Fed Cup crown in 2003, and served as the captain from 2012-2016. She guided the team to the 2016 final before stepping down. The 38-year-old also coached three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray for two years.

"I am delighted to open doors. It’s the most appropriate expression,” Mauresmo said in a press conference. “I am opening doors because I think there is competence, experience and a path that has led me here. I had to prove myself as a player, as Fed Cup captain and as a coach with andy Murray, who had confidence in me. and I thank him for that."

The FFT also announced that Julien Benneteau will take over as the Fed Cup captain as he retires from the tour. Both Benneteau and Mauresmo will begin their tenures in 2019.

France is the defending Davis Cup champion and will face off against Spain in the semifinals in September in Lille.
