World reacts to Cecchinato's shock semifinal run

Marco Cecchinato got everybody talking with his 6-3, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-6 (11) win over Novak Djokovic on Tuesday to, against all odds, make the semifinals of the French Open as the world No. 72.

In an era of men's tennis marked by dominance, seeing a relative unknown come this far (He'd never won a Grand Slam match prior to this tournament!) came as a shock to people all over the world.

In fact, at the beginning of the fortnight, it was a different Marco—Cecchinato's second-round opponent, Marco Trungelliti—who was grabbing headlines.

But, after playing the best match of the tournament, the Italian Cecchinato rightly took over the conversation.

One dark cloud does hang over what could be the story of the tournament, though. In 2016, the Italian Tennis Federation suspended Cecchinato for match fixing. The decision was later overturned on a technicality.

In the semifinals, Cecchinato is set to take on the tournament's arguable second favorite, Dominic Thiem. Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, is still struggling to get past Diego Schwartzman in his quarterfinal. Their match was suspended midway due to rain.
