Two familiar faces have found their way back to the main draw at the French Open as 2014 semifinalist Ernest Gulbis and former Top 20 star Bernard Tomic came through qualifying.

Gulbis, a former Top 10 talent from Latvia, lasted through three hard-fought matches. The world No. 162 capable of playing the dangerous level of tennis that saw him knock out Roger Federer in Paris in 2014.

Another player who has fallen from the upper echelon of the men’s tour, Tomic showed impressive resolve to qualify after struggles in form and motivation over the last 12 months.

The 25-year-old, now ranked No. 208, didn’t drop a set en route to the Roland Garros main draw. But the draw didn’t do the Aussie any favors as he faces countryman Nick Kyrgios in the first round. Kyrgios has struggled with injuries in 2018 and has not played a match on clay yet this season.

Gulbis will open against Gilles Muller. Both Gulbis and Tomic are not scheduled to start on Sunday, when main-draw action kicks off.
