The French Open qualifying draw is officially underway, but two Americans who won't have to worry about making the main draw are Noah Rubin and Taylor Townsend. The pair won wild cards through the USTA's Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge.

They were each awarded a wild card based on results at clay-court events in April and early May.

Rubin once sparred with Roger Federer across three close sets at the 2017 Australian Open, but, in part due to injury, the 22-year-old hasn't played in a Grand Slam main draw since. He racked up 80 of his 86 wild-card points when he won the Tallahassee Challenger, losing only one set in five rounds.

Rubin played one year of college tennis for Wake Forest, during which he made the final of the 2015 NCAA singles championship.

Townsend nearly tripled the Wild Card Challenge points of her closest competition, winning ITF pro circuit tournaments in Dothan, Ala., and Charleston, S.C. Only a player's two best results count for the Challenge, but the 22-year-old also made the semifinals in Charlottesville and Indian Harbour Beach.

Her ranking is now up to a career-high No. 71.
