As one of the top players in a golden era for Italian women’s tennis, the 35-year-old made a mark for herself on tour, winning four Fed Cup titles and reaching a career high of No. 7 in singles.

While she may be best known for stunning Serena Williams in the semifinals of the 2015 US Open, which prevented the American from completing a calendar-year Grand Slam, Vinci also achieved great success on the doubles court. Alongside her countrywoman Sara Errani, she reached No. 1 in the doubles rankings, and completed the career Grand Slam.

Vinci played her final match on Monday in Rome, falling to Aleksandra Krunic in three sets to close out her illustrious career.
