As time passes, the old gets replaced with the new. It's inevitable, and while some players, such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, have fought Father Time with great success, others have not fared as well. Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and Novak Djokovic are all examples of stars slipping from great heights in recent months.

It's made room for younger players to step in and fill their shoes. Denis Shapovalov, after reaching the semifinals of Madrid replaced Raonic as the new Canadian No. 1, even defeating the 27-year-old in the round of 16. The teenager is up to a career-high ranking of No. 26.

Novak Djokovic, previously one of the unstoppable forces on tour, has also seen a dip in form which contributed to Filip Krajinovic replacing him as the new Serbian No. 1 after Madrid. But Djokovic wasn't ready to give up just yet. By making a run to the Rome semifinals, the world No. 22-ranked Djokovic regained his familiar position, while Krajinovic dropped a few spots to No. 29.

Kyle Edmund has taken the British crown from former No. 1 Andy Murray, who is struggling to get back onto the tour after a lingering hip injury has ruined his 2018 season so far. A quarterfinal appearance in Madrid, and a round of 16 showing in Rome has seen the 23-year-old Edmund shoot up the rankings to a high of No. 17. Murray currently sits at No. 45.

In recent months, Hyeon Chung and Kei Nishikori have been battling over the title of No. 1-ranked Asian. Despite Chung not playing in Rome, the 22-year-old from South Korea is one spot ahead of the Japanese 28-year-old with a No. 20 ranking.

It can be hard seeing fan-favorite players being surpassed by newer names, but it's a sign of fresh blood coming up on the tour, establishing themselves for the long run for when players like Djokovic and Murray ultimately retire.
