They did pretty well for themselves, too, going 3 for 4, all against formidable opponents.

Jack Sock, with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win, leveled his career head-to-head with longtime Top 10 mainstay David Ferrer at two wins apiece.

On Next Gen Arena, Ryan Harrison beat higher-ranked Yuichi Sugita 7-6 (5), 6-3. No. 12 seed Sam Querrey suffered the Americans' only loss of the day, falling in two sets to Peter Gojowczyk, who has beaten Americans Tim Smyczek, Sock, John Isner, Reilly Opelka and Johnson this year.

Jared Donaldson took the court early on Monday, losing to Pablo Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-3, 0-6. Madison Keys, Frances Tiafoe and CoCo Vandeweghe are set to all kick off their main-draw campaigns on Monday as well.
