Clay can be unforgiving, and incredibly messy, as Carla Suarez Navarro learned on Tuesday. But the Spaniard managed to pick herself up, dust herself off and knock out No. 4 seeded Elina Svitolina in the second round of Madrid.

Both Svitolina and the umpire came running to Suarez Navarro's side, but luckily, she seemed OK. She was certainly healthy enough to battle to a dramatic 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 win.

Needless to say, the fans absolutely loved the battle.

Suarez Navarro, ranked No. 6 just two years ago, has now beaten Svitolina for the second time in 2018. The 29-year-old home favorite has had a rollercoaster year. She's reached the quarterfinals of both the Australian Open and Indian Wells, but hadn't won a match since March going into the Mutua Madrid Open.

The word No. 25 will face either Johanna Konta or Bernarda Pera next.
