This weekend of semifinal action brought two highly-anticipated Fed Cup ties and so far it’s been all about the Czechs, winners of five of the last seven trophies.

In the blockbuster semifinal of the weekend, it was the Czech Republic, behind their two biggest stars, charging past hosts Germany, gaining a decisive 2-0 advantage heading into Sunday.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, a two-time title winner already in 2018, led the Czech domination, cruising past Julia Goerges, another of the hottest players on tour, 6-3, 6-2 to get off to an early lead in Stuttgart.

The Saturday sweep was clinched when world number six Pliskova powered past Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3.

There was a more intensely fought tie in the south of France where the hosts were locked at one-all with the defending champions US after the first day of play.

The Americans were looking good for a 2-0 lead going into Sunday after a dominant opening set from Coco Vandeweghe but France’s Kristina Mladenovic fought back to level the tie at one match apiece with the 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Sloane Stephens, fresh off her triumph at the Miami Open, fought hard in her first match on clay this season, giving the US a critical opening point with her 7-6, 7-5 win over Pauline Parmentier.

The Fed Cup semifinals will conclude Sunday with reverse singles action between Pliskova and Goerges in Stuttgart and Mladenovic and Stephens in Aix-en-Provence.
