The clay-court season picked up full momentum in Monte Carlo. Clay contenders, including Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, took time to give their thoughts on what makes the red surface so special (and so annoying) to play on.

When it came to the best parts, there were some similar answers. Both Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin agreed that they loved the movement on clay, with Dimitrov saying, "I think the best thing is sliding all over the place, I love that."

On the flip side, almost everyone was in agreement that the worst thing was getting their clothes and socks dirty.

Of course, eventual Monte Carlo champion Nadal had nothing bad to say about his beloved clay. "To me, there is nothing negative," the 31-year-old admitted.

Nadal didn't lose a set all week long before taking out Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday for his record-setting 11th career Monte Carlo crown.
