All eyes might be on Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as they try to jumpstart their belated seasons in Monte Carlo, but another recovering player has quietly gotten off to good a start worthy of some love.

Kei Nishikori has won his first two matches in Monte Carlo, both against quality opponents, to advance to the round of sixteen. A slow start against Tomas Berdych in the first round (that’s how far Nishikori’s ranking has fallen—Berdych was his opening round opponent) looked ominous.

But Nishikori bounced back in a big way to route Berdych 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. He followed it up with a solid victory over Daniil Medvedev, 7-5, 6-2 on Wednesday.

His next opponent will be the wily Andreas Seppi, but he has to like his chances for a place in the quarter-finals. What a reversal of fortune that would be for the injury-plagued Japanese star.

Is Nishikori a threat to win a clay-court event in 2018? History would say so. During his best career year in 2014, he did make the Madrid Open final, and as one of the best all-court movers on the tour, his game is well-suited to clay. If his Instagram is any indicator, he is a #ClayNishikori to be feared.

Monte Carlo is a different story, though. He hasn’t so much as played the event in six years. Now ranked No. 36 in the world, Nishikori will no doubt be happy just to get some matches under his belt. This is a guy who started off the year at a second-tier ATP Challenger event, after all.

Then again, flying safely under the radar is one of the most dangerous places to encounter Nishikori. If he continues to improve through the clay-court season, he won’t be there for long. Come the French Open, he might rejoin the pack as a legitimate contender.
