On an action-packed opening day of Davis Cup quarterfinal action, split ties were aplenty as three of the four matchups saw countries end Friday locked at one match apiece.

The highlight of a stacked set of Davis Cup last eight ties was Germany’s visit to Spain and the two evenly matches squads, led by Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal respectively, closed action Friday at one-all.

Returning to the court for the first time since the Australian Open and a hip injury, world number one Nadal leveled the tie for the host Spaniards and setting the record for the longest career Davis Cup win streak along the way.

German Zverev, also a top five player, earned a comfortable victory over Valencia-native Davis Ferrer in the opening rubber.

Another highly-anticipated quarterfinal tie, France and Italy were locked at 1-1 after the opening day of play in Genoa.

Italy’s Fabio Fognini leveled the tie for the hosts after a dramatic four set win over France’s Jeremy Chardy. The French came out on top in a dramatic match earlier in the day when Lucas Pouille defeated Andreas Seppi in five sets.

The splits in opening singles action continued between Croatia and Kazakhstan as Marin Cilic won easily before Mikhail Kukushkin tied it up for the Kazakhs with a four-set upset of Borna Coric.

Davis Cup action continues Saturday with the critical doubles rubbers taking place before spots in the semifinals will be decided come Sunday.
