Miami Open leaves Crandon Park on the perfect note

It was a bittersweet, perfectly scripted farewell to one of the legendary venues of American tennis as the world said goodbye to professional tennis at Crandon Park.

In fitting fashion, the final Miami Open to be held on Key Biscayne featured an American sweep of the trophies, with Sloane Stephens and John Isner hoisting the singles crowns.

Isner's final against Alexander Zverev was the last singles match played in Crandon Park.

"This tournament has so much history. I mean, all the best players have played here thought the years," Isner said. "For Sascha and I to share the court in the last men's singles match ever here at this tournament is amazing. I never thought I would be in this moment considering how I was playing coming into this event."

Completing the American domination at Crandon Park were doubles titles won by the Bob and Mike Bryan and CoCo Vandeweghe winning with Australian Ashleigh Barty.

South Florida native Stephens’ triumph represented the invariably-linked connection between the history of 30 years of top-tier tennis in Key Biscayne and the contributions Florida as a global tennis hotbed has made to the sport.

"Obviously this place is pretty special to me. I grew up playing tennis here. When the USTA was here, we played Orange Bowl and all sorts of tournaments here," Stephens said. "I'm definitely happy that I could be the last person to win here. I have had some amazing experiences here, and I'll definitely miss it."

As the longtime flag bearer for American tennis, Isner’s win capped off three decades of American dominance at Crandon Park, with 15 of 32 men’s singles champions in Miami representing the USA.

While the history and memories from Key Biscayne will be hard to replicate, the future of the Miami Open is bright as a new chapter begins next year at the nearby Hard Rock Stadium.

It might not have the natural beauty and uniqueness of Crandon Park, but the tournament that started it all in Florida will remain in the Sunshine State.
