It’s already on to the next stop for the players on the WTA and ATP tours. Before we turn our attention to South Beach, though, here’s your look back at Indian Wells and what transpired in the doubles draws.

Almost, Sam. Almost.

At the just-completed BNP Paribas Open, Sam Querrey was the only player—male or female—still in contention for the much-ballyhooed $1 million singles-doubles bonus at the tournament by the quarterfinal stage.

While that big prize did go unclaimed, players that usually do the bulk of their work in singles showed they’re not too shabby with a partner on their side.

‘SISNER’ STRIKES AGAIN

On the men’s side, Jack Sock and John Isner put their singles struggles aside to wreak havoc on the doubles draw. The unseeded duo didn’t drop a set on their way to the final, knocking off Ivan Dodig and Rajeev Ram and Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic along the way.

In the championship match, they faced Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in an all-American battle.

Sock and Isner prevailed with another straight-sets victory to take their second career ATP Masters 1000 title together, having won in Shanghai in 2016.

FIRST TIME’S THE CHARM

And to think, they weren’t even planning to play together.

Barbora Strycova was going to play with Andrea Hlavackova, while Su-Wei Hsieh’s intentions were to partner Monica Niculescu. Pushing it close to the deadline for signing up to even get into the draw, they were left to team up as their plans to switch partners didn’t happen. Niculescu and Hlavackova ended up as a team, too.

You can say they made the most of their new partnership with a win over the top seeds Ekaterina Makerova and Elena Vesnina in the final behind points like this.

That’s how you start off a partnership…oh, wait. Hsieh is supposed to be playing with Niculescu in Miami.

After this, though, a Strycova-Hsieh reunion has to happen at some point.
