Before Sunday, Naomi Osaka, a world No. 44 ranked player from Japan, had yet to win her first title—at any level.

In Indian Wells, seven wins later, the 20-year-old secured a Premier Mandatory crown, which many consider the unofficial fifth Grand Slam.

Her list of opponents is impressive: Maria Sharapova, Agnieska Radwanska, Karoline Pliskova and Simona Halep were all top players she had to get through to reach the final where she defeated Daria Kasatkina, 6-3, 6-2.

Osaka is the first unseeded champion of Indian Wells since Kim Clijsters in 2005 and is the youngest champion since Ana Ivanovic in 2008.

Her play and her awards speech won over countless fans during the two-week stretch, not to mention her many honest facial expressions.

Osaka is notoriously shy, despite her big-hitting game.

Though her ranking has jumped to No. 22, she's unseeded at the Miami Open and drew Serena Williams in the first round.
