Williams played only one month of tennis in 2017, but in doing so she set the Open-era Grand Slam record of 23, while pregnant.

Federer, after taking the final six months of 2016 off, won his 18th and 19th majors in 2017 at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza, who both held the No. 1 ranking in 2017, were nominated for Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year as well. Other tennis nominees included the French Davis Cup team (Team of the Year), Jelena Ostapenko (Breakthrough of the Year) and Yui Kamiji (Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability).
