The 2018 season has already been filled with surprises and repeats, but here are a few predictions for what could be to come:

1

Federer plays the French Open

An important part of Roger Federer’s strategy in his resurgence has been managing his schedule to preserve his body throughout the season.

It’s no secret clay is as close to kryptonite as it gets for Federer. With Rafael Nadal returning to his dominance on the red stuff, Federer’s been judicial with how much he plays during the late spring months, going as far as to skip the French Open in 2017. The move paid handsome dividends.

His chase for oldest No. 1 in history is complete, but his latest goal of 100 ATP titles is still on the horizon.

While he’s hinted at yet another light clay season this year, don’t be surprised if Federer plays Roland Garros this year. While he may never say it, Federer may love nothing more than to capture a second French Open title and prove his 2009 title was no fluke.

2

Halep wins her maiden Slam

They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Simona Halep has a chance to prove that with her first Slam title this year. She’s been as close as you can get on three occasions without winning—twice at the French and this year at the Australian Open.

While her body failed her Down Under, her mentality has unquestionably improved under coach Darren Cahill. She can take inspiration from her Aussie Open vanquisher Caroline Wozniacki, who pushed for nearly a decade to win her first Slam. The French Open seems her most likely stage.

3

A Williams wins a Slam—and it may not be Serena

Betting against Serena Williams is never a good idea, but she’s in unchartered territory trying to return to the top as a new mom. With only an exhibition and a low key Fed Cup appearance under her belt (both losses), it’s hard to know what to expect from her this year. The more sure bet to go deep at a Slam and possibly win one is older sister Venus. She had a brilliant 2017, making two Slam finals, and this year marks 10 years since her last Slam. She'll be the greatest threat at Wimbledon.

Djokovic gets his mojo back

After months of speculation, alternative therapies and prescribed rest, Novak Djokovic finally resolved himself to surgery for his ailing elbow. He’s always dangerous during the clay-court season, and with a few more matches under his belt, he could be in position to contend for a Slam.

The Fedal dominance carries on

Much like last year, opportunity abounds for players outside of the Big Four to breakthrough and capture their first Slam. And much like last year, don’t be surprised if Federer and Nadal continue their dominance. When they’re healthy, the biggest challenge they face is each other. Even as big names like Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic make their returns, it could be awhile yet before they’re playing the top-tier tennis they’re used to.
