MELBOURNE — Tennys Sandgren knocked out Stan Wawrinka on Day 4 of the Australian Open in dismissive fashion, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4. Though the Swiss was struggling for most of the match, no one can take a first-ever Grand Slam third-round appearance away from Sandgren.

The 26-year-old American only just cracked the Top 100 last year, but he's been working hard to fullfil the expectations that come with a first name like his.

"I don't give my name when I order a sandwich or a coffee. I say 'David' or something like that. I don't want to deal with the whole name thing when I get a coffee, especially first thing in the morning," he said. "It's interesting. It certainly is unique."

Sandgren enjoyed his experience both on court, and in the press room.

While Wawrinka, playing in his first even since Wimbledon, wasn't himself.

"His movement wasn't where it was at. His sharpness wasn't probably as sharp as he would have liked to have played," Sandgren said. "He kept his emotions under control, kept fighting. [I] got a little scared. Somebody in the stands at 3-5 in the third, yelled out, 'Keep digging, Stan.' He gave a little head nod. I'm like, Uh-oh, shhhh. That's scary. Don't do that."

Wawrinka underwent knee surgery last year, and had shoulder problems to start 2018.

"It's tough right now. As I say, I like to win. I don't like to lose," Wawrinka said. "I'm sure if I look really what happened the last 12 days, I can build a lot of confidence for the next few months because every day I was improving."
