MELBOURNE — The biggest news on Day 1 at the Australian Open was Team USA and for all the wrong reasons. Only three of 15 emerged victorious: unseeded players Nicole Gibbs, qualifier Mackenzie MacDonald and Ryan Harrison.

Casualties included Sloane Stephens, Venus Williams, CoCo Vandeweghe, Jack Sock, John Isner, Irina Falconi, Jennifer Brady, Alison Riske, CiCi Bellis, Kevin King, Sofia Kenin and Taylor Townsend. It was certainly a forgettable day for the United States, but plenty of the biggest stars had incredibly positive things to say—particularly Sloane Stephens.

"I wouldn't call them tough times," she said. "Everyone is so depressed and so down. It happens to everyone. Like, eventually I'll start, what I told you in D.C., I'm going to beat someone eventually. I will have the best Instagram picture when I finally snap this losing streak."

Jack Sock may have said it best:

"It's a tough sport. People lose, it happens. It wasn't my day. It wasn't John's day. It wasn't some of the American women's day."

There was also a ton of Americans still left, so not all is lost yet. In Day 2 action, Madison Keys, Sam Querrey, Tim Smyczek, Tennys Sandgren, Bernarda Pera and Denis Kudla all won.
