Two years ago, Zhang Shuai won her first career main-draw Grand Slam match on Margaret Court Arena—on her 15th attempt. Her opponent was a world No. 2-ranked Simona Halep, and Zhang rode that unexpected way all the way to the quarterfinals.

This year, she pulled off another upset on the same court over No. 13-seeded Sloane Stephens, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2. Here's match point:

Despite the tension and the drama, with Stephens serving for the match at 5-4, Zhang couldn't help but gush over her opponent, on the court after the match and in the press room.

And that was how Stephens felt about Zhang before the match. This is what the American said after:

"I love her. She's great. Super nice. I have known her for a long time, obviously. I think everyone loves her. I don't think one person doesn't like her."

In an era where many fans think there's only tension between WTA players in the locker room, it's uplifting to come across a player and person like Zhang.

"I'm so happy I saw her win the US Open because before the US Open for almost one year she couldn't play tennis," Zhang said. "She's a very nice girl. I like her very much and she's always nice to me. Sometimes you're a little sad to play your friend in the first round."

Zhang's got a solid chance at another deep run this year as she faces qualifier Denis Allertova in the second round.
