The ITF has announced the world champions of 2017 with Rafael Nadal and Garbine Mugurza leading the way. Nadal finished the year at No. 1 with six titles (including his 10th French Open and third US Open crowns).

"I am very happy to receive this award from the ITF and be the 2017 ITF World Champion. It is four years since I last finished No. 1 on the ATP rankings and this has a special feeling," Nadal said. "Congrats also to Garbine on her achievement which is great for our country. Many thanks to my team and my fans, and a special thank you to my uncle Toni for all these years."

Fellow Spaniard Muguruza finished the year at No. 2. She beat out the actual No. 1 Simona Halep by winning Wimbledon (for her second major) and Cincinnati.

It's the first time Muguruza has earned the honor, and 2017 marks the first year since 1998 (Pete Sampras and Lindsay Davenport) that two compatriots have won the year-end awards.

Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo and Chan Yun-Jan and Martina Hingis were named doubles world champions.

"It’s a great honor to be recognized again as ITF World Doubles Champion and to have the news top off what’s been an amazing final season for me," the recently-retired Hingis said. "I look forward to coming back to Paris next year."

All of the world champions, including wheelchair and juniors (Axel Geller and Whitney Osuigwe) will be given their awards during Roland Garros next year.
