Williams posted some consistent results on the hard and clay courts over the next few months. It was on the grass, though, where she recaptured the Grand Slam magic. At Wimbledon, the site of her most success, the American reached her second major final of the year, before falling to Garbine Muguruza.
At the year’s last major, the US Open, Williams was on the short list of contenders. Playing in the tournament 20 years after her run to her first Grand Slam final, Williams reached the semifinals, losing to Sloane Stephens in one of the year’s best matches.
Her success throughout the year helped her clinch a spot at the WTA Finals. There, she reached her third prestigious championship match of the year, posting wins against Muguruza and French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko along the way. Caroline Wozniacki stopped her run in the final.
It was as if Williams had been sipping from the mythical fountain of youth all season long. She’ll turn 38 next year, but as her play this season showed, age is nothing but a number.
