One of the great coaching partnerships in modern tennis has ended for a second time. Last week, Andy Murray and Ivan Lendl announced that they will be going their separate ways.

Murray, whose brilliant career has been in the shadows of titanic contemporaries Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovc, had his greatest runs of success under the legendary Czech star.

Starting in 2012, the Scot broke through with the 2012 Olympic gold medal, 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon titles. The Wimbledon title secured his immortality in British sports and attracted global sports recognition.

The face of British tennis subsequently had difficulties finding his form after back surgery, and he and Lendl separated in March of 2014. Although he found moderate success with coach Amelie Mauresmo, Murray could not break through Djokovic’s stranglehold at the top of tennis. He and Lendl agreed to reunite in June 2016.

The results were immediate and spectacular. Murray won his second Wimbledon title and an Olympic gold medal in Rio. He stormed through the second half of the year winning eight titles culminating with his first ATP Finals trophy.

He finally fulfilled his dream of becoming the No. 1 player in the world, which he held for 41 weeks.

Murray has been hampered by injuries in 2017 and ended his season after Wimbledon. At least it's clear that he and Lendl ended on amicable terms.

The online world had a little fun with the famously stoic Lendl.

As Murray rebounds in 2018, he still has a terrific team in place headed by Jamie Delgado. They reenter a very different ATP landscape that has seen a renaissance of Federer and Nadal and the rise of stars like Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov. Murray will look to get back to contending for major titles once again.
