Before the start of the ATP Finals semifinals, David Goffin said that he would "try something, something different, something that I've never done in the past." And he did in two big ways: defeating Roger Federer for the first time in his career and reaching the ATP Finals final.

The Belgian pulled off a rare double during the week by beating both Rafael Nadal and Federer. He would take out Nadal in his opening round-robin match, before ousting Federer in the semifinals. Goffin had not beaten the Swiss player in seven meetings and had never beaten Nadal either.

The 26-year-old had lost his round-robin match to Grigor Dimitrov 6-0, 6-2 but put up a far better fight in the final, ultimately going down 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Goffin should still be very proud, both of his week in London and of his season. Though his year isn't over yet—he will lead Belgium in the Davis Cup final against France this weekend.
