Novak Djokovic dropped by Lewis Howes’ “School of Greatness” podcast to dish on his humble beginnings in Serbia, his experience as a UNICEF ambassador, and how he discovered the inspiration to become one of the game’s greats.

For the first half of the discussion, Djokovic revisits his tough beginnings growing up in Serbia during the Bosnian War. By now, it’s a well-known origin story, but here Djokovic offers more details about his parents’ mountainside restaurant, commuting to Belgrade for school, how tennis initially got his attention, and the daily reality of life during the war.

Later in the interview, Djokovic gets emotional recounting his experience with the Syrian refugee crisis as a UNICEF ambassador. Lately, he has been busy promoting World Children’s Day.
