It’s no secret how important the Swiss Indoors tournament is to Roger Federer. The world No. 2 just won his eighth title at the tournament at his home event, defeating Juan Martin del Potro, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3.

Here’s a look back at five big moments for the Swiss superstar in Basel over the years.

1

His first Swiss Indoors title in 2006

After finishing runner-up in 2000 and 2001, Federer finally won the title at his hometown event. It wasn’t easy, though, as he eked out semifinal and final third-set tiebreak wins against Paradorn Srichaphan and Fernando Gonzalez, respectively. Federer—a former ball boy at the tournament—also started a tradition that year of throwing a pizza party for the ball kids after winning.

A big win against Nadal in 2015

Federer, facing Nadal for the first time at the tournament, beat his longtime rival in three sets. This was also Federer’s first win against Nadal in more than three years as he snapped a five-match losing streak against the Spaniard.

Signs of his arrival in 2000 vs. Enqvist

Unseeded, the 19-year-old Federer reached his second final of the year—and his career. On his way to the title match, he defeated Tommy Haas in the first round and number-three seed Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals. He lost the final in five sets to Thomas Enqvist of Sweden.

Turning the tables on Djokovic in 2010

Federer’s three-year streak of winning the Swiss Indoors came to an end in 2009, when Novak Djokovic beat him in the final. Federer exacted his revenge in 2010 with a three-set victory over the Serb.

The start of a hot fall in 2011 vs. Nishikori

Federer entered the 2011 tournament in a 10-month drought as far as winning titles. This was also the first year that he hadn’t won a Grand Slam since 2002. The Swiss Indoors provided a comfort zone for him as he won the title with a straight-sets victory over Nishikori. Federer went on to capture two more tournaments in the fall, including the ATP World Tour Finals to finish the year at No. 3 in the world.
