Denis Shapovalov has had a breakthrough year in 2017, starting the season outside of the Top 250 and breaking into the Top 50 in the world in the fall. The 18-year-old managed to seal a spot in the ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan.

The Canadian tells the ATP that his breakthrough moment was during Rogers Cup where he beat Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal on the way to the final.

"It was unbelievable just standing on the same court as these guys like DelPo and Rafa, it's an honor," Shapovalov said. "I grew up watching them win Slams and tournaments so it's big motivation."

He followed that run up with a fourth-round showing at the US Open as a qualifier. His rise to fame has been fast—even Vogue has taken notice.

Shapovalov was knocked out of the second round in Basel, but will be playing the Paris ATP Masters 1000, where he'll face off against Julien Benneteau.
