Round-robin tournaments can get weird. The WTA Finals are unique in that, because of the format, a player's fate isn't always in her own hands. It can lead to some funny, and complex, scenarios to decide the semifinalists.

On Friday in Singapore, Elina Svitolina—whose semifinal dreams were already dashed—defeated world No. 1 Simona Halep in straight sets. The main beneficiary, though, was Caroline Garcia, who advanced to the year-end championships' semifinals as a result of Halep's loss.

Garcia suggested in press that she may owe Svitolina a drink in return for the favor. Though Garcia did fight back from a 5-3 deficit in the third set to beat Svitolina on Wednesday.

Svitolina's response: "I think I'm expecting more than a drink."

Garcia takes on Venus Williams for a spot in the final.
