It was worth the wait for Julia Goerges, winner of this week's WTA title in Moscow. In fact, a total of six years of waiting for a championship culminated with a straight-sets rout of Daria Kasatkina in what was Goerges' fourth singles final of 2017.

She did it by firing unreturned serves to end her final three matches – two aces and a reply that found nothing but net – against Kasatkina, Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Lesia Tsurenko, respectively.

What's more, in the new WTA rankings, Goerges' ranking rocketed up from No. 27 to No. 18, placing her one slot   ahead of compatriot Angelique Kerber, who dropped from No. 11 to No. 19 after a season of downward-spiraling results.

That will make Goerges the No. 1 German player in women's tennis, something she might not have envisioned for herself year. Even so, it has come to pass.

And what an unpredictable year it has been overall. With Goerges' outcomes trending upward, Maria Sharapova continuing to regain her footing and Serena Williams' return date not yet disclosed, the new German No. 1 may find herself on the verge of a Top 10 berth in a few months' time. For the time being, count it as a week's worth of glory for Goerges.
