In their ninth Masters encounter on a hard court—and only the third one in a final—it was Roger Federer who broke the 4-4 deadlock with a straight-sets win over Rafael Nadal in the Shanghai. It’s Federer's third Masters title and fourth win over his biggest rival in 2017.

Here’s a look back at some of the ATP Masters 1000 matches on hard courts between the two over the years.

1&2

Miami 2004 (Nadal) and 2005 (Federer)

In their first encounter, 17-year-old Nadal shocked the two-time Grand Slam titlist in straight sets in the second round. A year later, it looked like Nadal’s winning ways would continue as he took the first two sets against Federer in the final. After being on the brink of defeat, Federer rallied in five sets to take the championship.

Cincinnati 2013 (Nadal)

Federer, the defending champion, fell at the quarterfinal stage to his longtime rival, who went on to win the title over John Isner for his first Cincinnati crown.

Indian Wells 2013 (Nadal)

In 2012, Federer defeated Nadal in the semifinals on the way to his fourth title in the desert. The following year, the Spaniard turned the tables, beating Federer in the quarterfinals on the way to his third Indian Wells title.

Miami 2017 (Federer)

Playing their second final—and third match—of 2017, Federer defeated Nadal to complete the “Sunshine Double” after winning Indian Wells, the first Masters 1000 event of the year.
