As the old saying goes, "When something is perfectly fine, completely replace it"? At the Wuhan Open this year, the tournament introduced a modern, but somewhat convoluted system to replace the traditional coin toss that decides which player serves first.

In the Caroline Garcia vs. Ekaterina Makarova match, each player was assigned a symbol. Then, a line judge tapped a button to activate a spinning wheel, then tapped it again to stop. The wheel then chose a symbol corresponding to either player. It's cool, fun and modern, but also too complicated while doing the same thing that a simple coin can do.

Unfortunately, coins don't have enough advertising space on them.

Garcia defeated Makarova, 7-6 (3), 6-4 on her way to the biggest final of her career.
