Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza rose to the No. 1 ranking right after the US Open. Even with her somewhat disappointing fourth round finish in New York (with a loss to a resurgent Petra Kvitova), the Spaniard has plenty of reason to celebrate.

She and Rafael Nadal are the first countrymen to hold the top spots at the same time since 2003 (when Andre Agassi and Serena Williams accomplished the feat).

Muguruza will play her first event as the world No. 1 this week at the WTA Premier event in Tokyo.

The 23-year-old is the fourth woman to hold the No. 1 spot in 2017 (after Angelique Kerber, Serena Williams and Karolina Pliskova) and the 24th overall.
