In their debut campaign together, Martina Hingis and Yung-Jan Chan have perhaps been the most consistent team on the WTA Tour, winning six titles heading into the US Open. The only thing missing, though, was a Grand Slam title.

That’s no longer the case.

Hingis and Chan beat the Czech team of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova in straight sets to win their first major title together.

From the first ball this fortnight, Hingis and Chan were on a mission. The closest any team got to taking a set from the pair was in the third round, when Kristina Mladenovic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova pushed them to a 7-5 second set.

Throughout their championship victories over the course of the year, they were able to escape numerous match tiebreaks to clinch wins. However, in their first two Grand Slams together this year—at Wimbledon and the French Open—they were unable to even reach a final, despite entering both tournaments in fine form with two warmup triumphs before each major.

Winning the US Open surely helps to ease any of that earlier disappointment. For Chan, it’s her first Grand Slam title after four runner-up finishes in women’s doubles and mixed. The Hingis second act continues as she won her second major title of the weekend, having captured the mixed doubles on Saturday with Jamie Murray.

Hingis now has 25 total majors on her ledger. This one has to be considered one of the more unexpected victories, considering the partnership is so new.
