Maria Sharapova has battled back to a starring role on the WTA tour. Perhaps nothing was more fitting than a sensational exchange of drops and lobs between Sharapova and hard-hitting American teeanger Sofia Kenin in the third round on Friday night.

Sharapova had pulled out a tough first set and she had some breathing space at 7-5, 4-2 before pulling off one of the week’s greatest highlights.

The former No. 1 never looked back and the match finished with 7-5, 6-2 scoreline despite a valiant punching effort from the 18-year-old Kenin.

In her post-match interview, Sharapova talked about the epic point:

“I thought that rally ended, like, two, three balls before it actually did. I think I hit a shot, then I almost felt like I turned around, and next thing I knew she got it back. Feel like she did that a couple of times.

“She has some wheels on her. Yeah, she made me hit another ball.”

Sharapova moves into the fourth round where she will be favored against Anastasija Sevastova.
