During the prohibition era, Newport became a hub for gambling and bootlegging, due to a number of factors. The mafia took notice, and soon Newport was seeing millions of dollars flow into town thanks to its underground activities. Some even say that this area, nicknamed Sin City, was Las Vegas before Las Vegas.
