Career-Best Rogers Cup Performance: Second round, 2016

2017 High:  A year removed from capturing the Wimbledon boys’ title, Denis Shapovalov has had a fairly rapid ascent up the rankings, peaking at No. 130 in July. His biggest moments have come on the ATP Challenger circuit in front of his home crowd in Canada, including winning his first career title at that level in Drummondville earlier in the year, and a second in Gatineau last month.

2017 Low: Two words: Davis Cup. Shapovalov tried to bat a ball in frustration into the stands while playing against Kyle Edmund in the first-round Great Britain-Canada tie. Instead, the ball hit the chair umpire in the eye. Shapovalov was defaulted, which caused Canada to lose the tie. The 18-year-old said he learned a lot from the unfortunate experience.

Best Social Media Moment: There’s no doubt about it: Shapovalov is a brilliant shotmaker. In the first round of Queen's Club on grass, the Canadian upset Edmund behind shots like this.

Rogers Cup Outlook: Shapovalov faces a make-or-break stretch to try to improve his ranking to avoid qualifying for the US Open. Shapovalov is at his best on faster surfaces and as far as his temperament goes, seems well-suited to handle the unique conditions Montreal presents. He thrives in front of home crowds, having upset Nick Kyrgios in Toronto last year for the biggest win of his career. Odds are this will be the last year he has to rely on a wildcard to get into the tournament.
