John McEnroe is promoting his upcoming memoir, But Seriously, which goes on sale Tuesday. Yet the only thing that those who heard his comments on NPR are saying is: You cannot be serious!

McEnroe has been emphatic that there is "no question" that Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, is the greatest women’s tennis player ever. But he expanded on that, saying that “if she played the men's circuit, she'd be like No. 700 in the world.”

The seven-time major singles winner could have simply stopped at praising Williams’ greatness rather than comparing her to those who compete on the men’s tour.

“That doesn't mean I don't think Serena is an incredible player,” McEnroe said. “On a given day, Serena could beat some players. I believe because she's so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke 'cause she's been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, the US Open, etc. But if she had to just play the circuit — the men's circuit — that would be an entirely different story.”

Serena certainly did not appreciate McEnroe’s comments, responding publicly on Twitter Monday night.

Williams, who will miss the rest of the 2017 season as she awaits the birth of her first child, was not the only one who noticed what McEnroe said.

But seriously, it seemed like everyone enjoyed Serena hitting McEnroe’s serve back for a winner.

McEnroe then had an opportunity to respond on Tuesday morning when he appeared on CBS, but refused to apologize.

"She's the greatest female player that ever lived, then the lady [on NPR] said to me, I don't remember which one, but she said, 'why did you say woman, why don't you just say the greatest, you know, tennis player that ever lived?'" McEnroe said.

"And so then I felt the need, however unfortunately probably, to defend myself. I don't know, just say what I really felt, which is about what I think she would be."

McEnroe admitted that he is trying to promote his book, "but not this way." Despite saying he has no intention of facing off against Serena, he has previously said he thinks he could beat her.

Some have felt that the whole incident has been overblown.

Whatever your stance, certainly don't expect a 21st Century Battle of the Sexes anytime soon. According to *Vanity Fair* and Williams’ spokeswoman, Serena  could be back on tour as soon as January.
