Some stars passed on playing in the French Open, while others weren't allowed in. You know all their names. What matters is what took place inside and outside the lines in Paris. On the heels of a fairly predictable and alternately off-the-chain major event, here are the thoroughly vetted, unequivocal–or entirely subjective–best and worst moments from the 2017 French Open.

Kristina Mladenovic was a home favorite in Paris, coming in hot from one of her best season stretches ever, and she came out on top against defending champion Garbine Muguruza in a quarterfinal slugfest.

Muguruza then faced the press and struggled to stay composed:

After a brief delay to gather herself, the Spaniard once again became Muguruthless:

Mladenovic had readily engaged the crowd in cheering both for her and against her foe, Muguruza, in that battle. She had also exclaimed “Vamos!” a number of times in Muguruza’s general direction throughout the match. Mladenovic speaks quite a few languages and is well known for often taking to the native tongue of the foe at hand.

And what’s more: For those up against French players, a tough crowd will always be the case in Paris.

From Maria Sharapova to Muguruza, Mladenovic remains one not inclined to shy away from a fight. After the fact of her Muguruza encounter, penning a rambling, first-person essay for Sport360, Mladenovic mused about how she deemed her home-country crowd ultimately quite fair to her opponent. (She also aired dirty laundry on her non-relationship with her ex-doubles partner Caroline Garcia.)

Whatever you might think of certain players, it’s good to be reminded yet again that, underneath it all–the brand-name kits, the players’ parties, the pomp and celebrity of tennis–they are independent contractors who, for the most part, are hellbent on winning.
